Festival Bau Nyale 2012: Melebur dalam Kemeriahan Pesta Rakyat Sasak di Lombok

Pada 12-13 Februari 2012, di Pantai Seger atau di Pantai Aan (masih dalam konfirmasi), masyarakat Sasak akan mengelar upacara tradisional Bau Nyale. Festival ini tidak hanya melibatkan suku Sasak lokal tapi juga pemerintah setempat dan tentunya wisatawan dari berbagai negara. Festival ini rutin dirayakan 5 hari setelah bulan purnama atau hari ke-20 bulan ke-10 dalam kalender tradisional Sasak.
Festival Bau Nyale 2012 akan berlangsung selama dua hari menampilkan aneka lomba tradisional seperti bekayaq, cilokaq, peresean, begambus, berbalas pantun, dan lomba mendayung perahu. Sebagai event akbar rakyat Lombok, Festival Bau Nyale juga akan menggelar berbagai pertunjukan kesenian, diantaranya adalah: drama kolosal tentang legenda Putri Mandalika, wayang kulit, penginang robek, dan teater legenda Putri Nyale.
Suku Sasak sendiri adalah kelompok etnis dominan yang mendiami Pulau Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat. Bau dalam bahasa Lombok berarti menangkap dan nyale adalah sejenis cacing laut yang hanya muncul dipermukaan beberapa kali dalam setahun. Bau Nyale adalah upacara meriah dimana suku sasak beramai-ramai menangkap nyale di sepanjang pesisir pantai Lombok. Tahun ini acara tersebut akan berlangsung di Pantai Kaliantan, Desa Pemongkong, Kecamatan Jerowaru, Lombok Timur.
Penduduk setempat percaya, bahwa nyale bukan hanya cacing biasa tetapi makhluk suci yang membawa kesejahteraan. Oleh karena itulah, mereka menghormatinyadan percaya akan mendatangkan kemalangan bagi yang mengabaikannya.
Legenda mengatakan bahwa pada masa lalu, hiduplah seorang putri cantik bernama Mandalika. Cerita tentang kecantikannya terkabar sampai ke setiap sudut pulau, sehingga banyak pangeran jatuh cinta padanya dan sangat ingin menikahinya. Untuk mendapatkannya, mereka menciptakan suatu pergolakan di seluruh pulau. Melihat kejadian ini, sang putri sedih dan merindukan perdamaian di tanahnya. Untuk mengakhiri kekacauan itu, Putri Mandalika menenggelamkan dirinya ke laut. Saat pengikutnya mencoba menemukan tubuhnya, mereka hanya menemukan cacing laut yang berlimpah yang hingga saat ini dikenal sebagai nyale dan diyakini sebagai reinkarnasi Putri Mandalika. Oleh karena itu, nyale yang muncul setiap tahun di pantai dianggap sebagai putri cantik yang mengunjungi rakyatnya.
Dalam upacara Bau Nyale, Anda dapat menyaksikan penduduk desa, pemerintah setempat, serta pengunjungberduyun-duyun ke pantai melebur dalam tradisi kuno ini. Upacara Nyale juga dikenal di Sumba yang diikuti oleh Festival Pasola.
