Pasola Festival 2011, Sumba, Nusa Tenggara Timur

Pasola adalah bagian dari serangkaian upacara tradisional yang dilakukan orang Sumba yang masih menganut agama asli yang disebut Marapu. Bentuknya adalah ‘perang-perangan’ yang dilakukan oleh dua kelompok dengan cara berkuda. Setiap kelompok terdiri lebih dari 100 pemuda bersenjatakan tombak yang dibuat dari kayu berdiameter kira-kira 1,5 cm yang ujungnya dibiarkan tumpul.
Diadakan dibeberapa desa, tetapi pada tanggal 25 Maret 2011 ini akan diadakan di Desa Wanokaka, Sumba Barat. Acara ini merupakan kesempatan langka bagi pengunjung untuk menyaksikan pertempuran tradisional yang menarik ini. Pertempuran ini merupakan bagian dari kepercayaan tradisional Marapudi Sumba, di mana Pasola merupakan bagian tak terpisahkan dari ritual tahunan, setiap tahun pada bulan Februari atau Maret serangkaian upacara adat dilakukan dalam rangka memohon restu para dewa agar panen tahun tersebut berhasil dengan baik.
Dahulu Sumba dikenal sebagai Pulau Cendana, berdampingan dengan Pulau Komodo dan Flores merupakan penghasil kuda-kuda terbaik di Indonesia. Kuda-kuda Sumba merupakan hasil persilangan antara kuda Arab dan lokal, karena itu kuda-kuda di Sumbawa lebih besar dari kuda-kuda lainnya di Indonesia.
Untuk menuju ke sini tersedia penerbangan setiap hari dari Bali ke Waingapu di Sumbawa Timur dan Tambaloka di Sumba Barat. Pulau ini juga dapat dicapai dari Maumere di Flores.
