Day – 3 29MAY 2018 WAISAK RITUAL AT BOROBUDUR TEMPLE

The peak of the Waisak ritual will begin at the Githa monastery. The devotees will then proceed with pradaksina or ritual prayer that spins three times around the Borobudur temple, moving clockwise from east to west. An integral part of the ritual is to light a candle and the song of the Ghata Visaka Puja by the congregation. Towards the last seconds of this year's Waisak moment all worshipers will meditate in deep spirituality followed by the blessings given by Bhikkhu Mahathera and Bhikk Mahasthavira.

Marking the summit of the Vesak ritual series, about 1,000 Puja lanterns will be released into the sky representing enlightenment for the entire universe. Performed every year during the full moon in May, Vesak commemorates the three most important events in the life of Siddharta Gautama Buddha known as Tri Suci Waisak. The first important event was the birth of Prince Siddharta at Lumbini Park in 623 BC. The second episode was enlightenment (nirvāṇa) in which Prince Siddharta became a Buddha in Bodhgaya at the age of 35 years 588 BC, and the third was the death (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha at Kusinara at the age of 80 in 543 BC. Therefore, Vesak is also known as the day of Budhha alone.
