Get ready for the exciting Komodo Festival 2017

Prepare your diving gear, your snorkels and camera and make sure to carry large capacity memory cards, and get ready to immerse yourself in a spectacular experience that is the Komodo Festival 2017, scheduled to take place for one whole month from the 4th February to 4th March 2017, centered at Labuan Bajo, in the West Manggarai Regency, East Nusatenggara Province.

The festival will be highlighted with exciting events that include a so-called Komodo Parade, Photography Competition, Beach Volley, Boat Rowing Competitionsthe Komodo Beauty Pageant, Workshops, Handicrafts Exhibition, Art and Music Performances, and a whole lot more.

This will be the perfect opportunity for you to explore the spellbinding beauty of Labuan Bajo and the islands in the Komodo National Park along with their pristine white sandy beaches and even a pink beach, extraordinary underwater life,impressive scenery, and of course the unique culture of the local people themselves.


During the festival, everyone is invited to visit the Papagarang Traditional village which has many unique attractions. The village is located in the midst between Labuan Bajo, Komodo Island, and Rinca Island (Komodo, Rinca, and Padar Islands are the only three islands in the world in the Komodo National Park where Komodo dragons are still to be found roaming in the wild). Here, discover the unique cluster of sandy islands called the Nine islands which together form the number nine shape,where in its midst you can find Jellyfish trapped in the lagoon.

Here is also the traditional fishing village of the Bajo and Sape ethnic groups. Having a long tradition of seafaring across the Indonesian archipelago, the village featuredistinct stilt houses, you will see people drying fish and squid, while rows of traditional boats are parked along the beach. Whereas, at the western coast of the village, you will meet “mermaids”  - the unique sea creatures called dugongs. Rich in seaweed, dugongs find rich nutrients in this area,  the sight of which, of course, offers a rare,one of a kind spectacle for visitors.

Meanwhile, to further promote the wonders of the  Komodo National Park , the Ministry of Tourism will feature the Park during the Boots Dusseldorf 2017 sales mission and at other of world’s leading travel and trade shows like the InternationaleTourismus-Börse or ITB Berlin, to be held from 7th to 12th March 2017 in Germany.  

Accessibility to Komodo has also been improved with larger and more up-to-date airport at the city of Labuan Bajo, main entry port to the National Park. In  April 2017, Boeing 737-800 type aircrafts will be able to land at Labuan Bajo’s Komodo Airport, while further development in infrastructures and facilities continue to be made.

In order to ensure the protection of the habitat of the endangered Komodo lizards, it is, nonetheless made sure that the airport is still located sufficiently far from the Komodo islands. It takes around 3 hours by boat to reach Rinca and Komodo islands from Labuan Bajo.
