The enchanting natural features of Indonesia have yet again captured the attention of the world as some of the country’s most stunning beaches were named among the World’s 100 Best Beaches as released by CNN on 30th May 2013. The three beaches that made it to the list are Nihiwatu Beach on Sumba island which sits in 17th position, Canggu Beach on the fabled island of Bali which is in 39th position, and the pristine beaches of Derawan Islands in East Kalimantan in 63rd place.
Nihiwatu, a small and exclusive island hideaway in remote eastern Indonesia is one of the most extraordinary resorts in the archipelago. The Nihiwatu Resort, on Sumba island in East Nusatenggara province, describes itself as “the ultimate in privacy, exclusivity, views and romance”, and had been awarded Indonesia’s 2nd best hotel by Tripadvisor. Among travelers "in the know" who seek excitement with absolute privacy, Nihiwatu's reputation with its world class fishing, surfing and diving is unrivalled.
Aside from its exceptional culture, the fabled island of Bali has long built its reputation on some of the best surfing beaches in the world, and Canggu is no exception. This surf-perfect coastline has everything from easy waves to serious breaks. With unpretentious scenes and laid back moods, Canggu beach is one of the best spots to experience Bali in its finest ambience.
Warm, isolated islands with soft white sand beaches fringed with waving palm trees, pristine seas that change color from green to deep blue, and an amazing underwater life of giant turtles, dolphins, manta rays, dugongs and barracudas, stingless jellyfish and sometimes whales, the Derawan Islands are indeed one of world’s richest areas in bio-diversity. It is only fitting that the islands is considered as the third best dive destination in the world.
The CNN list was compiled by CNN staff who conducted their own research from various sources, The article mentions: “we've scoured the planet, demanded answers from our most well traveled friends, colleagues and cohorts, absorbed passionate pleas from readers, researched, investigated and examined the evidence then finally tipped the sand from our shoes, washed the brine from our eyes and put together a pretty good guide to the best beaches on the planet”.
