Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport Authority has announced that it will be closed to all regular flights for 24 hours on 12 March in conjunction with the Balinese “Nyepi” Day of Silence. An exception is made for arriving or departing Emergency flights. Ngurah Rai is the only airport on Bali.
This will affect 301 incoming and departing regular flights, said Efferson Siregar of the Airport Authority, which includes 94 international and 207 domestic flights.
The airport will close from 06.00 am Central Indonesia Time on Tuesday, 12 March and will reopen at 06.00 am the next morning, Wednesday 13 March.
The last flight to depart Bali will be Garuda flight GA 882 at 00.45 hours on 12 March leaving for Kansai, Japan, while last arriving flight that morning will be GA 420 at 00.25 hrs from Jakarta.
This estimate is based on present regular flights, since up to press time no extra flights have been requested, said Efferson, as reported by Bisnis Indonesia.
Nyepi is the Hindu Balinese New Year, which must be observed with complete silence, and absolutely no traffic, no noise and no movements outside the home and no public lights at night.
