The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has announced the launch of the Indonesia World Underwater Photo Contest 2013 (or IWUPC 2013 for short), offering a total cash prize of over US$ 200,000.
IWUPC 2013 starts from 1 January and will continue for 11 months, closing on 30 November 2013.
Carrying the theme: “Divers’Heaven, One Nation”, it is touted as the World’s Largest Underwater Photo Contest, as it is also the longest, and is considered the most prestigious. The Contest is open to “anyone with a camera”, both in Indonesia or anywhere else in the world. Entrants of all skill levels are welcome.
The Contest has 7 wellknown international Judges, these are Dr. Alex Mustard, Stephen Wong, Matt Weiss, Keri Wilk, Yoshi Hirata, David Espinosa and Burt Jones.
Already registered as Participating Dive Operators (PDOs) at the end of January are over 90 dive centers and liveaboards in Indonesia, that are mostly based in Aceh, Jakarta, Bali, Lombok , Komodo, Makassar, Manado, Lembeh, Kendari, Derawan, Wakatobi, and Raja Ampat and more. The Committee expects to have over 150 PDOs before the close of the contest, said Cipto Aji Gunawan, Committee member and marine ecotourism development and management consultant of the Ministry.
Interested individuals are required to register through one of the PDO’s, whose names, websites and contact numbers are listed in the committee’s website : www.indonesiaunderwatercontest.com
Each PDO is assigned a particular area of operation around which it is based, registrants residing in one city but wishing to take photographs in a different location can either register with the PDO in his or her area or register at the nearest dive center which already has an arrangement with the local PDO, who will then arrange with the location PDO to register entrants. For example a resident of Jakarta wishing to dive in Bunaken, does not need to register with the Manado PDO, but may register with the Jakarta centers, who will send the registration to their PDO counterpart in Manado to arrange the dive trips and photo shootout.
The exceptions are PDO Liveaboards that may cover any location in the Indonesian archipelago where they operate.
The Contest has a number of Categories, they are :
*Compact Category : including Basic Compact, Compact plus Wide, and Compact Plus Macro.
*DSLR Category : DSLR-Wide, and DSLR-Macro
* While by Subjects they also include : People and Marine Conservation, Junior Category and Best of Show.
The Committee also invites PDO’s as well as Indonesia’s regions to send in Events in their locations, both local photo contests, cultural festivals, Meetings and exhibitions, including those covering marine conservation activities, or anything to do with the sea and islands, which will be listed on the Contest website.
Winners announcement is expected to be in the 3rd. week of December. Top award winner takes home a hefty US$10,000 prize money.
