The island of Batam, located 30 minutes by ferry south of Singapore,- favored for its golf courses, sea food and nearby islands, - will have an additional 7 hotels this year, adding 700 new rooms to the present 6,500. This includes the recently opened Harris Hotel Batam Centre and the Batam City Condominium.
Present average occupancy of hotels on Batam has already reached 60% and rises even to 80% at peak seasons, therefore, the island welcomes the construction of new properties, said Rudi Panjaitan, Head of Tourist Facilities and Attractions in the Batam Tourist Office.
The seven new hotels will be one located at Seraya, two at Penuin, two at Batu Ampar, one in Tanjung Uncang and one in Nagoya. All are in the one star to four star categories.
With increased visitors to Batam, the island nonetheless still needs luxury five star hotels. The Batam Authority invites investors to build luxury hotels on Batam with land still available at Batu Ampar and Jodoh. The Riau Chamber of Commerce is prepared to provide land and capital to work in joint cooperation with international management, said Amat Tantoso, Deputy Head for Trade and Banking in the Riau Chamber of Commerce to Bisnis Indonesia.
At present, Batam has 56 hotels and resorts in the 1 star to 4 star categories.
In 2011, Batam received 1.2 million international visitors and 4 million domestic tourists, staying an average 2 days. Batam also hopes that investors will consider the construction of more tourist attractions to make the island more inviting and extend visitors’ average length of stay.
