Visitor arrivals to Indonesia in the period from January through April 2012 rose 8.9% to 2,323,039 compared to 1,529,896 in the first four months
of 2011.

“Considering today’s global economic uncertainties, Indonesia’s tourism growth of 8.9% is significant and is above the average global tourism growth of 5%” commented Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Pangestu.

Minister Mari further expounded that in the recent meeting of G20 Countries Tourism Ministers in Bangkok recently, the meeting remains convinced that tourism remains one of the most important contributors towards economic growth and increased employment. In the USA it is estimated that for every tourist, 35 new jobs are created.

Highest growth in arrivals to Indonesia was experienced in tourists from China, increasing by a hefty 42.57%. Other large increases were from the Middle East but from a low base.  While highest growth at destination airport was Bandung, which saw a rise of 24.62%. During the first four months of 2012, Bandung was visited by 46,007 direct overseas arrivals (most others visit Bandung overland via Jakarta), while last year the number of foreign air passengers numbered 36,919. Bandung has indeed become a favorite destination for Malaysians and Singaporeans, with increased flights between Bandung, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Minister Mari Pangestu remains optimistic that Indonesia will achieve the 8 million tourist arrival target this year, up from last year’s 7.6 million tourists.
