SAVE MUARO JAMBI Temple Complex: Petition

Posted on 13 Feb 2012 at 16:38 viewer 3246

The Association of Indonesian Archaeologists together with the  Association for the Conservation of the Muaro Jambi temple complex in the province of Jambi in Sumatra have sent a petition to the Governor of Jambi and the District head of Muaro Jambi  to save this most precious temple complex from  pollution and destruction.

Built between the 7th to the 14th. Century, the  Muaro Jambi temple complex dates back to the ancient Malay kingdom, which at the time was a center for Buddhist learning.  Buddhist scholars from around the region, including China were recorded to have studied religious teachings from books at Muaro Jambi.

The area is 12 kilometers long, situated along the Batang Hari river, covering an area of 2,062 hectares and is estimated to be 20 times larger than the Borobudur complex in Central Java or the Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia. It comprises 82 temples (or candi) of which 9 are the largest, they are the Kedaton, the Kotomahligai, the Gedong I, Gedong II, Gumpung, Tinggi I, Tinggi II, Kembar Batu and Candi Astano. These are the names given to each temple by the surrounding communities.

Despite being on  UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage Tentative List, the complex is today being encroached  and destroyed by coal mining and palm oil industries, ongoing since 1980. The complex, which has received far from sufficient attention and research so far is,  moreover, now surrounded by coal and palm oil factories built along the Batang Hari river, polluting the river and the air.

Deputy Minister for Culture and Education, Wiendu Nuryanti has promised that her Ministry will issue a Ministerial Decree to zone off and protect Muaro Jambi from further destruction.
