The Management of Mt. Rinjani National Park in Lombok, West Nusatenggara has announced that due to prevailing heavy rains and strong winds, mountain climbing on Mt Rinjani on the island of Lombok is considered unsafe and that , therefore, climbing this most prominent volcano in Lombok is temporarily closed for all mountain climbers starting 5 January to 31 March 2012.
Last year in 2011, some 12, 218 foreign and domestic tourists climbed Rinjani, of whom 8,032 were international tourists. The respite from visitors will also allow nature on the mountain to recover to its former glory after nine months of pressure from mountain climbers.
The Mount Rinjani National Park Management has two years running won the award for Best Community Managed Ecotourism destination presented by the Ministry for Tourism and Creative Economy.
Additionally, Mt. Rinjani National Park has been chosen as one of the 15 Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) to be established in Indonesia by 2014.
