WWF Sweden to support Tourism Development on Samosir Island, Lake Toba, North Sumatra

The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) of Sweden recently stated their support to develop Samosir Island at Lake Toba as a tourist destination by paying special attention to the beauty and preservation of the environment of the vast and magnificent Lake Toba.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of WWF Sweden, Han Efranzah, expressed this support at Pangurungan last 18 January 2012, reported kompas.com.
”As a tourist destination with high selling value, the pristine beauty of Lake Toba needs to be preserved” said Efranzah. He added that WWF, the foundation that focuses on the environment and also wildlife on Sumatra including the orangutans and elephants, will take part in developing the island of Samosir as a tourist destination, by constantly guarding the ecosystem of Lake Toba, the largest lake in South East Asia.
Efranzah was very impressed with the Batak culture of the people on Samosir and the pristine beauty of Lake Toba. Therefore, to preserve this beauty, Efranzah urged the government to conduct a thorough mapping of the area to ensure that the ecosystem is well maintained.”To preserve the ecosystem of Lake Toba, the district government of Samosir needs to map the area of Lake Toba and establish which zones may be used for commercial fishing and which zones are to be maintained for its natural scenery” said Efranzah.
According to Efranzah, Sweden have many beautiful lakes, but none equal Lake Toba by comparison, since in winter the temperature in Sweden can drop as low as 4 degrees Centigrade. Han Efranzah further said that WWF will cooperate with the district government of Samosir to preserve the ecosystem since Lake Toba has high potentials to be developed as a world class tourist destination.
The Regent of Samosir, Mangindar Simbolon, appreciated the support offered by WWF Sweden. Considering the potential of the district with all the splendor surrounding Lake Toba, the district government of Samosir has set its vision to establish Samosir as an Innovative Ecological Tourist destination by 2015.
The Regent further mentioned that the government is constantly improving the development of tourism by providing support, including in infrastructures.”To boost tourism, an environmentally friendly Geopark will also be built” said Mangindar.
