Jazz Gunung 2014

Combining the groove of Jazz and the mystifying highland ambience of Mount Bromo, the annual “Jazz Gunung” Festival is making a return on 20th to 21st June 2014 at the open air theatre of Java Banana Bromo Lodge, Cafe & Gallery, in Sukapura, Probolinggo, East Java.

Literally translated meaning “Mountain Jazz”, the event’s concept is exactly as it says: a jazz festival that takes place on a mountain. The aim, according to its organizers, is threefold, namely : a tangible showcase of the relationship between nature and art;  to showcase some of the finest jazz talents from all over the country; and also to further promote Mount Bromo as a destination that offers more than just a majestic sunrise.

The panoramic view that surrounds the setting of the concert venue is certainly one of a kind, as it overlooks the mountains and endless rice fields.

As in previous editions, this year the festival will feature some of the most talented jazz musicians in Indonesia. The first day of Jazz Gunung 2014 will be highlighted with the performance of Ligro Trio (an offshot of popular pop band GIGI), Monita Tahalea and The Nightingales, the Fender-sponsored The Overtunes, and trio Bintang Indrianto

The second day of the concert features equally popular acts, including ESQI:EF Syaharani & Queenfireworks, Nita Aartsen Quatro featuring Yeppy Romero, the double-bass group Indro Hardjodikoro and The Fingers, Jazz Ngisoringin, as well as the Ring of Fire Group Project led by renowned artist and musician Djaduk Ferianto.

Jazz Gunung was first staged in 2009, initiated by Sigit Pramono, a banker whose passion includes both hiking Mount Bromo and jazz music, who worked together with well-known artists Butet Kartaredjasa and Djaduk Ferianto. It was the first time ever that jazz landed at such a high altitude and the event successfully promoted the venue as a new favorite musical site.

Located at around 2000m above sea level, Mount Bromo  is a spectacle on its own. It offers stunning scenery and cool mountain breeze with temperatures ranging  around 14-18°C (about 57-65°F) during the day and a low 6-10°C (42-50°F) at night. As the spellbinding landscape meets exceptional jazz  performance, the event will be a night that offers one of a kind sensation.

You can reach Mount Bromo from Surabaya or Malang. There are direct flights to Surabaya from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hongkong, Jakarta and Bali. Sriwijaya Air flies twice daily from Jakarta to Malang. From Surabaya it’s a 2-3 hours drive to Mount Bromo, and from Malang the trip will take approximately 2 hours.
