For the whole month of November, from 9th to 30th, Jakarta is decorated with artworks as the 15th Jakarta Biennale 2013 transforms the city from the capital of the country to the capital of global art. Jakarta Biennale is a biennial international scale fine arts event which was started in 1968.
Carrying the theme "Siasat" or tactics, the Jakarta Biennale 2013 presents various artworks which express diverse creative ways of how ones survives in the city with complex social situations. The artworks featured ranges from installation arts, video and motion pictures, performing arts, public space arts, and various art activities that involve participation of the public. All kinds of public spaces and facilities such as the Transjakarta Bus shelters, traditional markets, city parks, cultural centers, art centers, and others are being turned into sites of these one-of- a- kind art exhibitions.
The event involves artists and artisans from all over the globe including from Argentina, Australia, Germany, Columbia, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, France, Czech Republic, and Vietnam. From the national scene the event also brings masterpieces from Bandung, Yogyakarta and other cities of Indonesia.
A number of workshops and Murals kicked off the event, while the pinnacle of the Jakarta Biennale 2013 will occur in late November at the Ismail Marzuki Art Center. Aside from presenting various unique artworks the event also aims to open creative spaces for the public and in the long run for Jakarta to grow into an inspirational city for the people of Jakarta and Indonesia.
