Krakatau Festival 2013

From 19th to 20th October, the spotlight will turn to the remnants of the mighty Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, as the Krakatau Festival 2013 gets underway. Being one of the Lampung Provincial Government annual programs, the Krakatau Festival is aimed to promote Lampung and all its wonders as one of Indonesia’s top tourist destinations.

Various programs and activities will highlight this year’s fiesta. On 19thOctober,  a cultural parade featuring Lampung’s traditional masks will take place centered in the town of Kalianda. The procession will start from the Lampung Regent’s Office, proceeding to the honorary stage at the South Lampung square and continue to the main roads until it reaches the South lampung Police Office. Commencing at 14.00 Western Indonesia Time, the parade will be participated by delegates from regencies and cities of the entire Lampung Province.

The parade will be led by the Police marching band, followed by Lampung’s historic royal umbrellas (Payung Agung), the Muli Lampung,  Lampung traditional music, giant masks, a collection of Lampung traditional masks, and closed by the Tapis Lampung Fantasy Street Carnival. In the evening, there will be an entertainment stage in the courtyard of the South Lampung Regent’s Office.

The pinnacle of the festival itself will take place on Sunday, 20th October 2013. Visitors can attend the handicraft exhibition which will be held at the Way Belerang, Buah Brak Village, Kalianda. The exhibition will feature various Lampung traditional handicraft and culinary products.

As the name suggests, the highlight of the festival is a voyage to the Krakatau site with main attraction being the Anak Krakatau volcano (the child of Krakatau). Taking place on 20th October, tour participants will depart from the Bakauheni Pier using Dharma Kencana IX ship. Participants are limited to only 280. The tour will take participants from Bakauheni to Krakatau and on to Merak on Java, and back to Bakauheni on Sumatra, then return to Lampung overland.
