18 Aug 2013 - 18 Aug 2013

In celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day on 17 August 2013, a grand National Cultural Parade will be staged in Jakarta on Sunday, 18 August, featuring thousands of artists from across the country’s 33 provinces, who will showcase the colourful and dynamic music and dance from around this culturally diverse archipelago.

Expressing Unity in Diversity - Bhinneka Tunggal Ika - meaning We are Many but we are One, the Nusantara Cultural Parade is expected to be a specially spectacular fiesta, moving around the Merdeka Square starting from the National Monument (Monas) at 14.30 West Indonesia Time.

Featuring the theme “Culture Unites the Nation”, the Parade will involve no less than 4,000 artists and artisans from all 33 provinces. Participants are divided by performance criteria comprising: traditional (past), contemporary (present), and new creations (future) from each province.

A multitude of musicians, dancers, and others in a variety of colorful costumes will showcase the uniqueness, traditions, creativity, and cultural wealth of each region. Also taking part are State owned enterprises like Garuda Indonesia (National Airline), PLN (National Electricity Company), and PT.Pupuk Kaltim.

The parade itself is designed by an artistic team that involves 3 renowned personalities, namely: Hartati (Choreographer from Jakarta), Heru Mataya (Art Director from Solo) and Deny Malik (Singer and Choreographer from Jakarta). The Cultural Parade is projected to encapsulate Indonesia’s wealth in cultural expressions. In addition, the event is aimed to raise awareness of Indonesia’s own authentic cultures and in the long term will increase the appreciation and pride in one’s own rich culture heritage, where eventually - as the theme states - culture will be the uniting factor of the nation with all its rich diversity.

The Cultural Parade is also expected to increase creativity of art performances, where carnivals can grow into icons of creative economy and tourist attractions. Ten participants will be chosen by a panel of judges as best performers based on concept, creativity, and overall performance.

The Parade will commence from the north area of the national monument to Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara pass the Istana Merdeka (National Palace). By the honorary stage in front of the Palace, each group will perform a 2.5 minutes attraction, before proceeding to Jalan.Medan Merdeka Barat .

In front of the Office of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, each group will present a display before reaching the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue at the crossroad to jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan. Here, special performances will again be staged at the Jakarta Town Hall, before the Parade finally finishes at the National Monument complex .
