In cooperation with UNESCO's International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF), the Erau International Folklore and Art Festival will be held once again at the town of Tenggarong, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan from 30th June to 7th July 2013.

Held by the Regency's government of Kutai Kartanegara Regency the Festival will bring a total of 250 representatives from 12 countries. The 12 countries participating in the festival are: Togo, Thailand, Taiwan, Egypt, Belgium, Canada, The Czech Republic, Greece, France, India, Russia, and South Korea.

The festival will feature a series of cultural ceremonies and folk festivities including traditional ceremonies from the Kutai Kartanegara Sultanate, Kutai's tradional art performances, and various folk entertainment.

The word Erau itself is derived from the local language "eroh" meaning cheerful or festive. The Erau ceremony itself has been around since the 16th century, but since the end of the Sultanate in 1960s, when Kutai Kartanegara changed into the Kutai Kartanegara Special Region and now into Kutai Kartanegara regency, the Erau celebration has not been observed. In 1970, under then regent Achmad Dahlan, the festival was revived and has since been celebrated during the regency's anniversary every September.

Besides featuring traditional Erau ceremonies as a main event, the festival will also feature world-class art exhibitions, traditional sports competitions, traditional markets and various street performances.
