From 5th to 9th December 2012, the enchanting beauty of Derawan Islands , East Kalimantan, will reveal its underwater splendor through the lenses of many competing photographers as the Sotong Photography Festival gets underway.
Warm, isolated tropical islands with soft white sandy beaches fringed with waving palm trees, pristine seas that change color from green to deep blue, and an amazing underwater life of giant turtles, dolphins, manta rays, dugongs and barracudas, stingless jellyfish and sometimes, whales Derawan is indeed one of world’s richest areas in bio-diversity. The Photography festival itself takes the name of one of these wonderful sea creatures, Sotong , the local name for Squid which also decorate the underwater realm of the Derawan Archipelago.
Sotong Photography Festival is divided into three competitions: Compact Original, Best Wide Angle, and Best Macro. The competition is open for public with minimum dive certificate of Advanced or higher. For the Wide Angle and Best macro the first place winner will receive a trophy and a cash prize of IDR25, 000,000, the second place will receive a trophy and IDR20, 000,000 in cash prize, and a trophy and IDR10, 000,000, for the third place. For the Compact Original category, the first place winner will receive a trophy and IDR10, 000, 000 in cash prize, the second place a trophy and IDR7, 000, 000 cash prize, and a trophy and IDR5, 000, 000 cash prize.
Located just away from the mainland of East Kalimantan in the district of Berau, the Derawan archipelago comprises 31 islands, most well known among these are the islands of Derawan, Maratua, Sangalakiand Kakaban. Here is Indonesia’s largest nesting site of the rare and endangered giant green turtles and hawksbill turtles, where one can daily watch turtles lay their eggs in the sand or swim at sea with the turtles. The entire marine conservancy region covers a total area of no less than 1.27 million hectares. With so many wonders lying belowthe surface of its waters, small wonder that the Derawan Islands are considered the third best dive destination in the world.
