Erau Festival 2012 in the ancient kingdom of Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan

The city of Tenggarong, the seat of the once powerful Kutai Kartanegara Ing Martadipura Sultanate will be the center of grand festivities as the Erau Pelas Benua Etam Festival  - or Erau Festival for short - gets underway from 1-8 July 2012. The series of events will take place at 11 different locations with the opening ceremony scheduled at the Rondong Demang Stadium in the district capital of Tenggarong.

Aimed to preserve and conserve traditional arts and culture, the Erau Festival hopes to perpetuate the wisdom and values of the Kutai Kartanegara royal heritage that dates back to the 14th century. While the term “Erau” itself comes from the local word “Eroh”, meaning festive.   The Event is supported by the Ministry for Tourism and Creative Economy.

Erau Festival features various art performances and traditional sporting games such as Marangin Malam, Menjamu Benua, Penabalan, Erecting wooden poles, Pelas or Palace Arts, Dragon games, Seluak Mudik,and Belibur. There will also be traditional Dayak arts such as Papaer Meper, Kuangkay, Mumutn, Ngayau, Lemakan Balei, Uman Undak, and Penhos.

The Mulawarman Museum will be the venue of various ritual ceremonies of the Kutai Kartanagara Ing Martadipura Sultanate, while the Kedaton Kutai (Palace of Kutai Kertanegara Sultanate) will be used for welcoming party and seminars on culture. The opening ceremony, Expo, folks bazaar, and entertainment will be staged at the Rondong demang Stadium. A unique feature of communal dining called Baseprah will be held along the road between the Bongkok bridge and Gunung Pedidik street. Off the pier in front of the Mulawarman Museum will be used as location for the floating culinary festival.

An Art performance stage will also be placed on the bank of the wide Mahakam River, in front of the Gerbang Raja Secretariat Building in KH Akhmad Mukhsin Street. Various exciting traditional sporting games will also take place here.

The pier in front of the Kutai Kartanegara’s House of Representatives (DPRD KUKAR) will be the location for the gala lunch. The pier will also be the starting line and ceremonial stage for the Dragon Boat races  and the traditional Ketinting boat race.

The courtyard of the Jagad Raya (The Universe) Planetarium will be the site of the fish cooking competition. The roads from Gerbang Raja Secretariat to Jagad Raya Planetarium will also be the site for the culture Parade.      

The festival will also feature a shooting competition which will take place around the Provincial office for Gardens, Cemeteries and Sanitation.

To get to Tenggarong, take a flight to the Sepinggan Airport at Balikpapan. Then take a taxi or rented car to Tenggarong via Samarinda.
